Summer Reading Loss (Website)

Printer-Friendly Format

Donalyn Miller is a 6th grade language arts teacher in Texas. Her passion for books is contagious not only among her students, but her colleagues, Twitter followers, and blog readers as well. As her school year draws to a close, Donalyn and her students set summer reading goals to prevent the dreaded summer decrease in skills. She stresses to them that "the most important books they will ever read are the ones they read after the school year ends. Choosing to read during the summer proves my students are independent readers who don't need my modeling or expectations to keep reading. They read because they want to, not because anyone requires it."

Donalyn doesn't just talk the talk...she walks the walk, challenging herself to read a book a day over the summer break! A book a day! And guess what! She wants us to join her. Are you up for the challenge?
