FAQ - What supports do you provide parents who want to help their children with strategy work?
We love the Parent Pipeline! Allison Behne has been writing these one page parent information sheets to give parents strategy knowledge so they can support their children at home. We have been adding a new Pipeline each week and will have all the CAFE strategy pipelines up soon. They can be found on the right side of this page, under The CAFE Menu. Click on any of the strategies, you will arrive at the strategy page that has the corresponding Parent Pipeline near the bottom of the page. Check it out. We think you may like it as much as your parents will. Here is this weeks addition to the parent pipelines...
Accuracy - Flip the Sound
When I was in elementary school learning to read I was often overwhelmed and frustrated with the decoding rules I learned. Nothing ever seemed to work for me like it did for the teacher! So now that I am in the teacher's seat, I look for ways to explain reading strategies in words my students understand and can relate to. More importantly, I encourage them to try a variety of strategies until they find one that works for them. Flip the sound is a fun strategy for children because they enjoy the kinesthetic movement of flipping their hand while they are flipping the sound in the word. This strategy can be brought to life in the classroom with the use of a spatula and little imagination. Have fun, practice frequently, and send the Parent Pipeline home so parents understand what it means to "flip the sound" and will be able to assist with this strategy at home.
