FAQ - Have you got any ideas to keep our vocabulary learning alive?
How about a Blog...
Julie Dunning did just that with her first graders. She shares below how she set it up, and if you scroll down and click on the link, you can visit her blog to check it out for yourself. Thanks for sharing, Julie!
Julie writes:
"I just introduced the blog this week but we have been "tuning into interesting words" for a couple of months. I posted the blog assignment and then projected it for my students and showed them how to comment. Then I asked them to each choose one word from either their personal word collector or our class word collector and respond during our computer lab time. I walked around and assisted as needed but allowed them to respond with their own spelling, etc.Another option is to assign or at least encourage the responses from home. I don't know if you linked to my web page, but the first assignment (tell why you appreciate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.) was done from home. I demonstrated how to blog at school with the kids but also sent an email to the families and asked them to take time over the long weekend to allow their first grader to blog. Some did it and some did not but it has been great for the kids to see their names and responses on the web page. It was also cool because parents and our principal blogged as well. That was exciting for the kids to see. As far as setting it up, I have a subscription to Teacher Web and it is in my opinion the "Create a Web Site for Dummies". All I had to do was choose that I wanted a blog page and type in my assignment. I know there are lots of ways to create blogs, I just don't happen to be an expert on that. My goal is to have a new blog assignment every two weeks or so. I plan to use interesting words as an assignment on and off throughout the year." http://teacherweb.com/Blog/OH/SummitElementary/MrsDunning/1/default.aspx
