FAQ - What materials might you use in Word Work that incorporate cursive writing?
We follow a few guidelines when planning our word work station: 1) The materials are tools not toys
2) The materials are either free or very inexpensive.
3) The materials are varied (we like to have 5 or 6 different choices)
4) The materials are permanent. We don't usually add new choices into the mix, but if we do, we remember that students will need time to explore before utilizing them as a learning resource.
If you are are looking for something that will work for cursive practice, try yarn. We cut ten to twelve 36-inch pieces of yarn along with some shorter pieces for dotting i's and crossing t's. We then modeled, for our students, writing words in cursive with the yarn. We found placing the yarn on carpet squares or even the carpeted floor helped hold it as we formed words.
