FAQ - How did you make the bulletin board size word collector and how is it used?
Many of our lessons for teaching vocabulary are anchored in our read alouds, either with chapter books or content area books. Each day we focus on 2-3 new words that are embedded in the material we are reading. So students can access the words in their conversations and in their writing, we record them onto a large word collector. This is simply a large piece of butcher paper or chart paper that we grid off with a marker into 25 equal sections. We then add one letter into each square on the grid. (We would do 26 sections for each letter of the alphabet, but 54 make a perfect square shape for the chart. We put the letters x and y together into one section). This simple chart provides a visual for the whole class to continually use and review. The fact that it is in constant view, makes it easily accessible as we refer to it, recalling wonderful words and their meaning. This allows us to build a common vocabulary together. We use the same idea for individual students by using a personal word collector. Click on the article and download below for more information.
