Most of time, no, we don't interrupt students while they are engaged in listen to reading, reading to someone or doing word work. Here is what we do. As we finish meeting with a group, we check our conferring calendar and see who we have set appointments with. We scan the group to see if one of these students is reading to themselves or working on writing. If so, we go to these students first, knowing that if a student we really want to meet with is not reading to themselves or working on writing at that moment, they will be during the next rotation, so we move on to someone else. If all of our appointment students are busy, we turn to our reading writing check sheet and see who we could meet with next. With 25-30 students in our classes, there is always someone we can meet with.
