FAQ - Would you please post a picture of where you display all of your I-Charts for the Daily Five?

Posting the Daily 5 I-charts has been an important reminder for our students of the behaviors we, as a class, commit to during our literacy block. When we brainstorm these behaviors and write them in front of the students, we usually do it on large butcher paper or chart paper. We want to keep these ideas safe from an accidental erasure. Once the I-chart has all of the behaviors posted and revisions made, we then take the chart to final copy by rewriting it in our best handwriting. At this time we usually use smaller paper so it won't take up so much space. As you can see above, Joan's charts have been written on 11x18 construction paper and are posted in the space above her white boards in her literacy gathering area. These charts can be referred to at a moments notice if a new student arrives or if the class needs a gentle reminder of the behaviors that are expected.

Some of us have the technology to create I-charts on interactive white boards. These can be stored on the computer and brought up and referred to when behavior wanes, or printed and posted in the classroom. To post or not to post depends on the needs of the students we have.

Here are some of the questions we ask ourselves before we post our I-charts.
  • Would this class benefit from the constant visual reminder of the behaviors for Daily 5?
  • Would this class remember the behaviors most of the time without the visual reminder?
  • Are new students arriving regularly or does the composition of the class stay the same throughout the year?

With the students needs at the forefront, we proceed to support them with the behaviors of Daily 5.
