CAFE™ - Conferring with a Beginning Reader, Part I of II (VIDEO)

Have you ever been faced with a beginning reader; managed to help them progress in the reading process and then wonder what to do next? In this video, Daniel and Joan take a look at an emergent reader who has made Daniel wonder that very thing.

Devlin is a very bright boy with an amazing vocabulary. He easily acquired letter recognition, letter-sound correspondence and knows many sight words. However, Devlin seems to have stalled in his progress. This is a common happening for our beginning readers. It is so easy for us to forget some of the very beginning, foundational pieces of reading when kids, such as Devlin, jump forward so quickly.

Listen in as Joan talks with Daniel about where Devlin is now and some ideas for moving him forward. You will see her recording their thinking about Devlin's strengths and goals on the Reading Conferring Form in Daniel's Pensieve. You can then see the follow-up video to this conversation, Conferring with Devlin, a beginning reader, Session Two, and watch the two teachers in action with Devlin.
