Conferring Calendars for Pensieve Notebooks Written by: Allison Behne
It is usually this time of year when we begin to prepare for our upcoming group of students. In doing this, we pull out our Pensieve to get it ready for the next group of children. Some of us may decide to replace the forms and use the same notebook, while others may be looking for a new notebook to start the new year. I usually try to have my notebook prepared before school starts so I am ready to start recording all of the wonderful information I will gather on my students.
In preparing my notebook for this school year, I decided to work ahead and design calendars for each month. I knew if I waited, I would end up printing off plain calendars because my list of "things to do" only gets longer once school starts. I Googled "free monthly calendar templates" and found a few websites that you may wish to visit to create your own calendar. Or, you may wish to use what I have already created. Either way, I think you will find it will be helpful if you prepare your notebook ahead of time and be able to cross one task off your "to do" list.

FAQ
Q: Do you know teachers who are looping with Daily 5 and what is different about Daily 5 the second year with the same students?
A: Cindy looped with her second graders up to third. She noticed how smoothly the Daily 5 routines started, since the behaviors and stamina were already in place. One of the challenges of third grade is getting through all the additional content. Cindy is going to incorporate content into the Daily 5 block. We can't wait to hear how it goes. . http://www.TheDailyCafe.com/public/1041.cfm

Daily 5 - Using the 5 Senses to Define Behaviors (Video)Sometimes students begin the year with a sense of urgency and motivation to build stamina, only to let it wain as the year progresses and nears it's end. It was precisely this that moved Rachel Andres from Glen Burnie, Maryland to go back to the basics, reviewing and refining with her students exactly what it meant to get started right away and to work the whole time. We think it's a smart idea, and might even be a great thing to define together as the year begins. Here's what she had to say: http://www.TheDailyCafe.com/members/1063.cfm

Parent Letter Explaining Daily 5 Translated into SpanishWe recently had the pleasure of meeting Patricia Bejarano, a third grade teacher on the Spanish Side of Dual Language from Nebraska. She translated a few of our documents into Spanish. If you are looking for a Parent Letter explaining Daily 5, The I Pick Chart or The Behaviors that Support Learning, she has done that for you. We don't speak Spanish so we appreciate Patricia's work. http://www.TheDailyCafe.com/members/1050.cfm
Video Updates
With the addition of our new video players with higher resolution and full-screen options, we are reposting many videos in this new format. As we make these improvements, we'll announce them in the newsletter. Here is an updated video you may want to revisit. We all want books in our rooms that our students will browse, explore and "fall into". Ron, a 5/6 grade teacher at Gail's school uses an old traveling trunk as a book shelf, filling it neatly full of chapter books and travel books that will take students on journeys and adventures to far off places.
