Personally, we'd almost always rather work with someone we've selected than have a partner assigned to us, which is why we teach our students how to quickly and kindly find someone of their own choosing to work with.

These students have already had experience in selecting partners, so Gail has two children model the steps, which are:

  1. Hand Up (to show you need a partner),
  2. Eye Contact (silent match-up),
  3. Move Toward Each Other, and
  4. Ask and Accept (refusing is not an option).

We explicitly teach the importance of voice tone and facial expression when asking and accepting.
